Borwankar will commence her visit next week onwards. Speaking to Mirror, Borwankar said that it is the duty of a police commissioner to visit police colonies to understand the problems faced by policemen and their families who reside there.

“The condition of old houses will be observed,” she said. Colonies like Khadak, Body Gate, Somwar Peth, Shivajinagar and Bhavani Peth were constructed by the British. Most of these houses are in a state of steadily worsening disrepair.

Borwankar said that in the last couple of years, the state government has spent Rs 11 crore through the state Public Works Department (PWD) to maintain and develop these colonies. “A review of these works will be done during the visits,” she said.

She said that if needed, more funds would be made available to the police colonies from the police welfare fund as well as other sources.
