An innovative mobile application developed by a city-based engineer has been listed as one of the top-three mobile applications in India. The National Association of Software and Services Companies (NASSCOM) selected Sagar Bedmutha’s ‘sms blocker’ for the honour.

Pune Mirror had featured Sagar’s ‘mobile watchman’, another application, in June 2010, which was a do-not-disturb (DND) application for cellphones.

“The application got great response and encouraged me to develop a more specific sms blocker. We launched the blocker two months back and it saw over a thousand downloads,” Sagar said.

He is a mechanical engineer who became an entrepreneur. He is the founder and CEO of Optinno Mobitech Pvt. Ltd.

NASSCOM had organised a techno conclave in New Delhi last week. Called Emergeout, it was attended by many emerging entrepreneurs, techies and innovators.

For the first time, NASSCOM organised a contest called AppFAME during the conclave, wherein the top 10 applications made by Indians were selected.

“The second round of the contest was more challenging, as all the top ten application innovators had to give a two-minute presentation using one powerpoint slide. Based on the presentation, they selected the top three,” Sagar said.

Sagar’s SMS blocker mobile phone application can be installed easily. The application runs smoothly in the Symbian operating system, which is used in Nokia phones.

The application blocks spam automatically. Sagar and his team studied over 3,000 patterns of promotional ads before creating the blocker. The application can review and restore blocked SMS. Which means, if you have blocked an important SMS, you can retrieve it easily.

“The application can also block Hinglish SMS,” he said. The blocker is available for download on http://www.smsblocker.in/. The trial version is free.

The SMS blocker is being displayed at the Nokia OVI store, resulting in international interest. Sagar said that 30 per cent of the downloads are from outside India. The same application also won an award in another contest organised by Silicon India.
